This CD offers the rare opportunity to enjoy two of Arthur Fiedler's albums in their original format, rather than as hacked together in an anthology. The title tune of Jalousie was originally recorded by Fiedler in the 1930's and became the first orchestral disc to sell over a million copies. It is a vivid tune with a fine arrangement and superb playing. The rest of the Jalousie LP is given over to light classics that are not often heard, with the exception of Arthur Benjamin's Jamaican Rhumba, and which fully deserve resuscitation. The Stardust LP is an appealing mixture of popular standards in lush orchestrations along with two reflective works by Debussy, including Clair de Lune. Listening to these plush tracks, it is amazing to realize that they were released in the same year that Fiedler recorded his first Beatles tune, I Want to Hold Your Hand. So this CD is a snapshot of the Boston Pops at a time when they had fully evolved one style and were about to turn to another in the swinging '60's. I hope someone will rerelease Fiedler's album Tenderly, also from this period and just as worthy.
