Creating Magic: 10 Common Sense Leadership Strategies from a Life at Disney

Creating Magic: 10 Common Sense Leadership Strategies from a Life at Disney

“It’s not the magic that makes it work; it’s the way we work that makes it magic.”

The secret for creating “magic” in our careers, our organizations, and our lives is simple: outstanding leadershipâ€"the kind that inspires employees, delights customers, and achieves extraordinary business results.

No one knows more about this kind of leadership than Lee Cockerell, the man who ran Walt Disney World® Resort operations for over a decade. And in Creating Magic, he shares the leadership principles that not only guided his own journey from a poor farm boy in Oklahoma to the head of operations for a multibillion dollar enterprise, but that also soon came to form the cultural bedrock of the world’s number one vacation destination. But as Lee demonstrates, great leadership isn’t about mastering impossibly complex management theories. We can all become outstanding leaders by following the ten practical, common sense strategies outlined in this remarkable book. As straightforward as they are profound, these leadership lessons include:
Everyone is important.
Make your people your brand.
Burn the free fuel: appreciation, recognition, and encouragement.
Give people a purpose, not just a job.

Combining surprising business wisdom with insightful and entertaining stories from Lee’s four decades on the front lines of some of the world’s best-run companies, Creating Magic shows all of us â€" from small business owners to managers at every level â€" how to become better leaders by infusing quality, character, courage, enthusiasm, and integrity into our workplace and into our lives.

Customer Review: Not just an other business light read...
Like most of us, I have read (or scanned) plenty of business related books.this is one I actually read closely and will keep. This is clearly written with great examples and stories, and it has very detailed action steps and anecdote. Maybe most surprising, this book is very honest as the author describes personal missteps were he ended up with stitches! He also does a good job of describing situations where people had to be let go and how he did more than normal referral to an outplacement agency. This is more than a quick read, and one I have already gone back to.
Customer Review: Creating Magic - 10 common sense leadership strategies from a life at Disney
Wow! VERY IMPRESSED with this book by Lee Cockerell. Working within the them park industry as a designer of Disney-Style dark-rides we temd to purchase almost anything about the Disney Empire, and because we have taken Disney Institute classes in Orlando we were anxious to dig right into Lee's book,,, and, again... WOW! This is the quintessential instruction manual for running your business properly! It can and will certainly be a book that provides insight to anyone who has a desire to 'understand how they can improve the running of their own company', regardless of what your company does. If everyone in business committed these techniques to memory and applied them (are you listening software guys?) the world would be a much more pleasant place! Bravo, Mr. Cockerell... well done!
