Hippo in a Tutu: Dancing in Disney Animation

Hippo in a Tutu: Dancing in Disney Animation
The ballet for hippo ballerinas and their crocodile cavaliers (plus a corps de ballet of ostriches and elephants) set to Ponchielli's "Dance of the Hours" in Fantasia (1940) is one of the best-loved scenes in all the Disney animated features. Many viewers may not realize, however, that this ballet is no mere generalized parody of ballet mannerisms, but is in fact a deeply informed, affectionate parody of a famous scene choreographed by George Balanchine for the film Goldwyn Follies (1938) and starring his wife, the ballerina movie star Vera Zorina.

With this sequence as a point of departure, Hippo in a Tutu examines the roles that dance, dancing, and choreography play in the Disney animated shorts and features. This profusely-illustrated chronicle both analyzes and celebrates dance in the Disney studios' work, while also investigating behind the scenes to find out how Disney's animated dance sequences have been made.

The Gospel According to Disney: Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust
In this follow-up to his best-selling The Gospel According to The Simpsons: The Spiritual Life of the World's Most Animated Family, religion journalist Mark Pinsky explores the role that the animated features of The Walt Disney Company have played in the moral and spiritual development of generations of children. Pinsky explores the religious, moral, and theological themes in 31 of the most popular Disney films, including Snow White, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and the Lion King, and discovers what he calls the Disney Gospel: faith that good will prevail, trust in yourself and your friends, and a little bit of something magical. Pinsky also looks at recent Disney developments, including the 1990s boycott of Disney by the Southern Baptist Convention, the impact of the theme parks on American culture, and the role that CEO Michael Eisner has played in the resurgence of the company since the mid-1980s.
Customer Review: DO NOT BE DECEIVED! GOD IS NOT MOCKED!
I have not read this book. As far as Disney I cannot comment on the man, but only the actions and ideologies his company puts forth. The Disney Company seems to be deeply rooted in the theme of magic. Disneyland is referred to as the magical kingdom. Many of Disney's films and cartoons include magical representations such as casting of spells, divination, witchcraft and sorcery. A lot of times these representations are presented as "good" which is a lie. There is no such thing as good/white magic, even the Book of Satan testifies that there is not a difference between white and black magic. READ DEUTERONOMY 18:9-14!!! These things are detestable in the sight of God. Can Christians find entertainment or enjoyment in things that God considers an abomination? To the spiritually weak or unbeliever, at the very least these films and parks desensitize you and prepare you to more openly accept things within this realm that you normally would not have. The more you see something the more you get use to it and the less wrong you may find it. Do not be deceived! Another example are Pirates, as in the Pirates of the Caribbean, which in reality are thieves and drunkards, also an abomination in the sight of God, for we know that neither of them have a place in the kingdom of heaven. Are these the things we want to glorify or shine a good light upon? Are we confusing our children or giving them a misrepresentation of right and wrong, good and evil?
Customer Review: Informative, but not Insightful
Pinsky starts off on an upbeat note, successfully discussing religious topics found in early Disney films, but as the book progresses through the company's animation history, Pinsky looses most of his analysis and commentary in favor of summarization. I felt that Pinsky did a good job explaining the premise of the post-Disney era films (beginning in the 80s and through the 90s - his insight picks up again in the 2000s) he lacked the spiritual commentary I was looking for, the commentary the book's subtitle "Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust," advertises. Overall, I would suggest this book as a good read, but there are probably more informative books out there for research purposes or more thought-provoking discussion.

Fun and Fancy Free (Disney Gold Classic Collection)

Fun and Fancy Free (Disney Gold Classic Collection)
Fun is probably worth the purchase for "Mickey and the Beanstalk," the second half of this combo-film. "Beanstalk" includes the last performance by Walt Disney of Mickey Mouse. It also has Donald Duck and Goofy as comrades who climb the beanstalk in their back yard to face Willy the Giant. This segment actually achieves the goals of the film's title. The first half, however, is "Bongo," the story of a addlepated circus bear. "Bongo" is more poky and interest-free. Dinah Shore warbles and narrates the segment, and it goes on much too long for its purpose. Don't trade your cow in for it. --Keith Simanton

Belle's Secret (Disney Princess Secrets)

Belle's Secret (Disney Princess Secrets)
Belle has a secret that nobody knows. When she became a prisoner in the Beast’s castle, she kept a private journal in which she wrote all her thoughts and feelings about the Beast and her enchanted surroundings. Find out all the details of Belle’s secret journal in this padded, glittered hardcover.
Customer Review: Can't even get the story right!!!!!
In this book, Belle keeps a diary recounting the events of the Disney movie "Beauty and the Beast." But the events are wrong and out of order! She writes about the romantic ballroom dance when she was in her golden gown ("I wished the evening could last forever!") then says "In the days that followed, we spent a lot of time together: feeding the birds, playing in the snow, reading books." My 6-year-old daughter, who loves the movie, was saying "But that's not what happened! They fed the birds BEFORE that! After they danced, she left to find her father!" It's just ridiculous that a respected company like Disney can't even be bothered to get the plot of its own movie right in a book spinoff. (Not to mention that Belle is presented as a simpering airhead, doodling her name and the Beast's with hearts all over her diary, instead of the intelligent young woman she is in the movie.) Disney should be ashamed of itself.

Walt Disney's Donald Duck Adventures: Ancient Persia (Gladstone Comic Album Series No. 10)
A Scientist kidnaps Donald and the kids and takes them to Persia where he awakens an acient story.
Customer Review: Great Story, Superbly Presented
I Suspect many people will buy this because they already know the artist, as well as the story. Over the years since this, and many other stories by Barks, have appeared, they have come in many formats, of which the best is the COLLECTED WORKS OF CARL BARKS, and now this series, including this title, comes in a nicely done cover, with Library quality paper. I have copies of this in a previous incarnation of the GLADSTONE prints, prior to the Publishers going bust. Thankfully, someone has realised that these titles are being bought by Adults who could not afford the collected works, but who wanted a title done in a collectable format that would last. Way too many versions of this title published since the late 50's and again in the 70s have been done on poor quality paper, and were priced accordingly. This Ancient Persia title works well in this comic format, however, some of the titles occurred originally in a strip format, and suffer when transferred to the comic page format. However, I managed to get some of these titles in a "hard" cover binding that preserved the strip ratio, without resorting to the comic page ratio that was edited with apparently little thought ( these editions in original strip format came out about 1982-84, and as far as I am aware are not currently available anywhere... so I hope someone can examine some of the original formats, and see what best goes back to the strip format). Enjoy ANCIENT PERSIA, if you read the original story years ago, this will echo beautifully in your mind in this lovely high quality paper print edition.
Customer Review: Another deep dive into our murky minds
Carl Barks is to little known in the US; in my homecountry of Sweden he is a minor deity on the other hand. Whole generations of Swedes have grown up reading his fantastic tales about Donald Duck, his nephews, Gyro Gearlose, and Scrooge McDuck. Barks himself never understodd his own greatness. He thought that he only wrote dime-a-dozen stories for kids. Yet, once you are hooked on Barks you read him also as an adult - the genius is so obvious. On the surface this is a simple adventure tale with comic interludes, but lurking beneath is fear and madness. This is perhaps his darkest tale. Set in an ancient Persian royal tomb. The cramped corridor, where the darkness waits just outside the circle of the torches gives a claustrophobic feel, which follows us throughout the story. One moment the professor appears rational and sane, then he is revealed to be an insane megalomaniac. While the antics of the resurrected royal family are funny, there, again, are traces of hysteria and mental unbalance. In the end they are so disgusted by the modern ways that they voluntarily seek oblivion in death. Donald Duck survives only by dying and being resurrected several times. The tale is funny, but it also gives the impression that the artist had far darker things in mind when he wrote it: this was the fifties, we were living in fear of the atom bomb, and what else the scientists were dreaming up in their laboratories. The tunnels and darkness are our feeling of insecurity in a world bordering on war, and our helplessness to prevent it.

The guide also includes info on SeaWorld, Discovery Cove, Busch Gardens, and the Kennedy Space Center. You'll also find individual park maps, up-to-date advice on finding the best package deals, and a free color fold-out map.
Customer Review: So Far so good.
I am only a little way into this book, but the information is great. Lots to think about and lots to plan. But it is all made easier by someone who has lived it. Thanks, I look forward to more exploring and to our trip to Orlando.
Customer Review: A fair guide book to Walt Disney World
With all the guide books available for Walt Disney World, how does this one compare? It is not as good as The Complete Guide to Walt Disney World, PassPorter's Walt Disney World and the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. But those are the top three guide books to WDW, in my opionion. This book does have a fair amount of coverage of WDW, but also spends time on other Orlando attractions and hotels. There's just nothing special about it that would cause me to recommend it when there are much better books out there.

Walt Disney Treasures - Mickey Mouse in Black and White, Volume Two
By the time "The Barn Dance" (1928), the fourth Mickey Mouse short and the oldest film on this collection, was released, Mickey was well on his way to cartoon stardom. The viewer can see how quickly the Disney animators improved between "The Barn Dance" and "Mickey's Kangaroo" (1935, his last black-and-white film). The characters are so rubbery in "Barn Dance," that when Mickey steps on Minnie's foot, her leg stretches out on the floor. Mickey and Minnie look noticeably more solid by "Mickey's Mechanical Man" (1933). "Playful Pluto" (1934) offers the landmark sequence of Pluto trying to escape from sheet of fly paper: one of the first instances where an animated character actually seemed to think and react to his environment believably. But it's Pluto who gets the laughs--Mickey is already turning into the straight man he eventually became.

The Disney shorts also improved as films during this period. The direction becomes surer, with increasingly imaginative camerawork. If some cartoons look backward, recycling gags from "Steamboat Willie," "The Barnyard Concert" (1929) anticipates "The Band Concert" (1935). In both films, Mickey conducts a group of ragtag musicians in Zampa's "The Poet and the Peasant" Overture, and "Barnyard Concert" feels like a rough sketch for the brilliant "Band Concert," Mickey's first color short.

A few of these films include ethnic imagery that was considered good taste in the early '30s, but is no longer acceptable, as host Leonard Maltin cautions. (Unrated, suitable for ages 6 and older: cartoon violence, tobacco use, ethnic stereotypes) --Charles Solomon

Disney's Karaoke Series: Disney's Greatest Hits

Disney's Karaoke Series: Disney's Greatest Hits
Customer Review: needs Karaoke machine!
Nowhere in the product description does it mention that you need a karaoke machine to see on-screen lyrics for this disc -- but that's exactly the case. I purchased this disc to play in a DVD player with a plug-in microphone, and, while it plays the music, it doesn't show any on-screen lyrics while playing in a DVD player. I am extremely disappointed in the product description.
Customer Review: Lots of fun here.
I purchased this to go along with a Karaoke machine I'd bought for my grandsons and they have so much fun with it.

Customer Review: Love the trivia!
Being a big Disney fan, we've usually purchased the Disney Days calendar but when I saw this one, I thought we'd give it a try since we'd probably enjoy our calendar more with a daily dose of trivia. We do own Louis' two trivia books which we really enjoy. (The Disney Days calendar has some trivia but not much.) Now that this has arrived, it's fun to have the daily trivia - some of it I already know, some is new. My only negative - the calendar could really use some color!

Mannheim Steamroller Meets The Mouse: Unique Musical Creations Based On Disney Songs

Mannheim Steamroller Meets The Mouse: Unique Musical Creations Based On Disney Songs
From the heartland of Nebraska, under the creative guidance of Chip Davis, the enormously popular Mannheim Steamroller has made some of the country's bestselling faux-classical synth-pop New Age music, as witnessed by the Fresh Aire and Christmas serials. Beginning in 1974, Mannheim Steamroller cleverly and skillfully created a niche--and more lucratively, a market--for their outfit and for a genre that has grown to encompass the likes of Yanni and Zamfir. On Mannheim Steamroller Meets the Mouse, Davis and his cast of accomplices tackle Disney stalwarts such as "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" (from Song of the South) and "Chim Chim Cheree" (from Mary Poppins), as well as relative newcomers to the Mouse catalog, including "Go the Distance" (from Hercules) and "You've Got a Friend in Me" (from Toy Story). Sadly, despite sweet moments in their rendition of Mulan's "Reflection" or the beloved Pinocchio tune "When You Wish Upon a Star," on which there is a lovely hand-bell choir sound, at best the Mannheim Steamroller registers a tepid nice. --Paige La Grone
Customer Review: Mannheim meets Mouse
This product is excellent, I got it for my dad's birthday and he plays it all the time in his classroom for his kids. There are a few teachers that are going to purchase it because they like it as well. Wonderful music!
Customer Review: Great Music!
Mannheim Steamroller's unique sound lends itself perfectly to the "Mouse." Wonderful music for all who love Disney!

My daycare provider has used this tape in her home for years. When she puts the movie on, the children literally go crazy w/ joy and excitement, as they love this movie. They jump up and down with excitement and request to see the movie repeatedly. All of the parents ordered tapes just to have them at home, because it's such a great movie. Very fun, educational and enjoyable for the kids. Not violent at all, a good buy for sure. My daughter is 2 yrs old and it's her favorite tape in the world.

Optimism shines in this classic 1960 Disney film starring Hayley Mills. When the newly orphaned Pollyanna comes to live with her wealthy aunt in Harrington Town, life looks promising. In a clash between the townspeople and Aunt Polly over local politics, it's Pollyanna's influence that helps individual townspeople find the inner strength to stand up for their own beliefs. When Pollyanna is involved in a serious accident, Aunt Polly finally realizes how much she loves her niece. Can Aunt Polly and the entire town somehow restore Polly's optimism and ensure a full recovery? Pollyanna is wholesome entertainment that will leave the entire family eager to play the "glad game." --Tami Horiuchi
Customer Review: Always loved this story
I believe this is the best of the Pollyanna movies. There is nobody like Hayley Mills. It's a sweet and funny way to return to your childhood. I'm enjoying introducing Pollyanna to my grandchildren and pleased to see that it's not all video games but that the simple things still appeal.
Customer Review: Not as good as the book
My daughter is 9 and loves this story. We read the book before ordering the movie and she couldn't put it down. The movie is very Disneyish with the colorful sets, simple characters and plot modifications to make the story "better". We are always on the lookout for good wholesome movies for our daughter and in that respect, I can recommend this one. But I highly recommend you read the book first. If you like this one, you can read Heidi next.

Mary Poppins (Disney Gold Classic Collection)
There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchanting Mary Poppins, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Disney's pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air umbrella), and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney sweep. The songs are also terrific, ranging from bright and cheery ("A Spoonful of Sugar") to dark and cheery (the Oscar-winning "Chim Chim Cher-ee") to touchingly melancholy ("Feed the Birds"). Many consider Mary Poppins to be the crowning achievement of Walt Disney's career--and it was the only one of his features to be nominated for a best picture Academy Award until Beauty and the Beast in 1991. --Jim Emerson
Customer Review: Mary Poppins rocks!
After all these years kids still LOVE this movie and whats not to like. Good clean wholesome entertainment. A classic!
Customer Review: Mary Poppins
This will always be enjoyed by generations to come. Julie Andrews was the perfect choice for Maria. Loved the extras with the film.

Make Mine Music (Disney Gold Classic Collection)

Make Mine Music (Disney Gold Classic Collection)
Sometimes referred to as "the Poor Man's Fantasia," Make Mine Music (1946) was the first of the "package features" Walt Disney released after World War II. Instead of Bach and Beethoven, the artists illustrated segments set to popular music by Benny Goodman, Dinah Shore, and the Andrews Sisters. Originally set to Debussy's "Claire de Lune," "Blue Bayou" remains an atmospheric evocation of the Everglades. "The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met" is a charming fantasy about a cetacean with an extraordinary voice. "Peter and the Wolf," based on the Prokofiev score, offers brightly colored designs, but the narration by Sterling Holloway seems superfluous. "All the Cats Join In" is an upbeat evocation of the Bobby Sox era, but "Casey at the Bat" and "Johnny Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet" feel self-conscious and unfunny.

"Two Silhouettes" combines rotoscoped images of Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo stars Tatiana Riabouchinska and David Lichine with kitsch cupids, sparkles, and hearts. "The Martins and the Coys," a spoof of a hillbilly feud, has been excised in a bow to modern taste. The supplemental material includes The Band Concert, the first color Mickey Mouse short and one of the character's finest performances, and Music Land, a quirky Silly Symphony about clashing musical styles. --Charles Solomon
Customer Review: Disney's first of 3 follow-ups to 'Fantasia' is superb!
After Walt Disney's 1940 masterpiece FANTASIA failed at the box office, it's surprising he ever again tried illustrating music with animation-- yet he did, gratefully. Some of Disney's best and these days generally unknown 1940s animated features follow the format laid down in that groundbreaking film. Created in part from scraps left over when the majority of Walt's animators were involved in WWII, these musical montages are quite good. The first to be released was MAKE MINE MUSIC (1946). Using popular tunes and some classical, and with the talents of Nelson Eddy, Dinah Shore, Benny Goodman, the Andrews Sisters, Jerry Colonna, Sterling Holloway and crooner Andy Russell, this delightful work has 10 distinct segments: THE MARTINS AND THE COYS has since been removed because it contains comedic gunplay. BLUE BAYOU was intended for FANTASIA. The music is DeBussy's "Clair de Lune." ALL THE CATS JOIN IN is a real highlight. Benny Goodman's band accompanies a pencil that sketches out the action. WITHOUT YOU is a ballad sung by Andy Russell. Jerry Colonna reads CASEY AT THE BAT. TWO SILHOUETTES is two actual ballet dancers seen as silhouettes against animated backgrounds. Dinah Shore sings the title tune. Sterling Holloway narrates Prokofiev's PETER AND THE WOLF. AFTER YOU'VE GONE features Goodman again and some highly unusual-looking musical instruments. The Andrews Sisters provide vocals for JOHNNY FEDORA AND ALICE BLUE BONNET, a story of two hats in a department store that fall in love. The final segment is best. In the poignant THE WHALE WHO WANTED TO SING AT THE MET, the giant sea mammal is harpooned and killed because it's believed his lovely voice emanates from an opera singer the whale swallowed. Multiple singing voices provided by Nelson Eddy. Music includes an aria from Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor. MAKE MINE MUSIC is also available on DVD. In 1947, Disney studios released another excellent animated musical montage called FUN AND FANCY FREE. (VHS edition) (DVD edition)
Customer Review: Make Mine Music
This wonderful Disney Classic is a must for any true collector. It is made in the style of Fantasia and my kids all love it.

Disney's Elegant Book of Manners Ls
Customer Review: Manners taught by Goofy & Mickey!
Heedless of adolescence, my children will huddle up to share The Disney Book of Elegant Manners when I read it to my much younger nieces -- who clamor for it whenever they visit. Clever and thought provoking, this book gives you the chance to visit with children about the "why" of manners and makes it fun. The illustrations are captivating and employ all the esteemed Disney characters (of old, that is!) and the manners are instructed in verse.

Walt Disney Treasures - Disneyland USA

Walt Disney Treasures - Disneyland USA
To finance Disneyland he wanted to build, Walt Disney turned to the new medium of television. As host Leonard Maltin notes on this two- disc set of televised specials for the amusement park, Disney used the series to promote it, "and no one seemed to mind." ABC agreed to invest in return for a weekly one-hour program. The "Disneyland" TV show premiered on October 27, 1954: "Disneyland Story" introduced the park and its various lands, which would be the subject of future programs. The opening-day special, "Dateline Disneyland" (July 17, 1955), attracted an estimated audience of 90 million--virtually every television household in America. Hosted by Art Linkletter, Robert Cummings, and Ronald Reagan, the live broadcast includes such unplanned moments as Linkletter searching frantically for a microphone in Fantasyland. The Tenth Anniversary show (January 3, 1965) features cameos of Mary Blair and Marc Davis, two celebrated animation artists. Home movie footage of Walt pacing off distances at the barren site in Anaheim is intercut with peeks at forthcoming attractions. "Disneyland After Dark" (April 15, 1962) offers performances by Annette Funicello, Bobby Burgess, Bobby Rydell, Louis Armstrong, and a prepubescent quartet of Osmond Brothers. A must-have set for Disneyland buffs, Disney collectors, and nostalgic baby boomers. --Charles Solomon
Customer Review: Great Collectors or Disney Fan item!
I have watched this several times since it arrived a week ago. I visited as a child in 1965. The images from the 10th Anniv. show really brought back many great memories. A great addition to our collection.
Customer Review: Amazing footage!
If this DVD only had the opening day TV footage, it would be well worth the price. But the other features are also wonderful time capsules of different points in Disneyland's history. My only quibble is that mine did not come in the nice tin or have any of the little extras inside. This was an oversight on my part because the description did say there was no tin. I did NOT know that the tins were limited edition and that only the tinned versions came with the postcard inside. I took one star off the review because I think this could have been clearer and not hidden in the description, so please read carefully about which version you're getting. It's not that big of a deal to me because what really matters is what's on the discs themselves. It just would have been nice to have a complete edition.

Disney's Haunted Mansion: Pop-Up Book (Disney's Pop-Up Books)
A spooky book based on the popular theme park attraction takes daring young readers on a private tour through a haunted manor house, where they encounter a ghoulish creature in a coffin, a decaying portrait, a fortune teller, and the backyard cemetery.
Customer Review: No new ground covered
This pop up is not as exciting as it could be -- a pedestrian representation of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyworld. Still, may be good for kids who either loved the attraction, or for parents who want to introduce their kids to the attraction prior to going to the park. For a more interesting take on pop ups, try Hauntion Mansion by Jan Pienkowski a much better pop up.
Customer Review: A nicely illustrated pop-up based on the Disneyland ride.
The Haunted Mansion pop-up book is based on famous Disneyland attraction. The art is quite nice and there are lots of "pop-ups." There is even a hologram inside! Some of the ghostly inhabitants are a little scary for really young kids but all in all it's a nice book even if you aren't a Haunted Mansion enthusiast.

This was the first, and best, cookbook my mother bought me. I still have my original copy and use it every once in a while. It is the BEST cookbook to use when teaching children how to cook. It's full of useful information for the aspiring cook.
Customer Review: true classic!
I am 36 years old and I still have this book. My parents got it for me when we went to the Magic Kingdom in the 70's. It is a treasure I will keep always and share with my nieces and nephew. I made the big bad wolfs brownies a lot. I still look at it and use it when I make hard boiled eggs; I can never remember how to make them. I love the memories this book brings to me. Disney Princesses Look and Find (Look and Find (Publications International))

Disney Princesses Look and Find (Look and Find (Publications International))
Customer Review: Fun for your little princess
My youngest daughter received this book last year for Christmas. For nearly a year it sat in her room undisturbed. She has recently shown an increased interest in princesses (I think that's standard when you are three) and is now very much in love with this book. Each picture has a Dear Diary entry and several images that you have to look for in the picture. It's similar to a Where's Waldo book with the drawings and sometimes quirky looking pictures, but the concept seems to resemble the I Spy books more. Some of the pictures are very easy to spot everything on the list and others, like the picture for Belle are more difficult. At the end of the book there is an additional list of things to find for each picture just like you would find in the Where's Waldo series. Overall, it's a great book for a Disney Princess fan who likes to play hide and seek. My three year old delights in looking at the pictures and finding the hidden objects. I like that books like this teach her to look at the details. My seven year old likes this book, too, but I think it's a little too easy for her.
Customer Review: Great for little girls who love Disney Princesses!
My daughter loves this book! When it is reading time, she has been pulling this one out for the past few nights. Not only is it a lot of fun, but educational. You don't have to just do the look and find of what they ask but you can also do counting and have them find colors, etc...

Disney's Storybook Collection Vol.2
Customer Review: familiar
this is a good storybook for the very young (2-3 yrs) as the stories are familiar for any children that watch movies etc. Helps keep their interest. Also, the stories are a perfect length for toddlers, and not weird like so many of the fairytales (especially the creepy, original versions).
Customer Review: A Good Book
The book is good but most of the stories are the same that has appeared in many other books. After all there are only so many Disney Movies! But your children are going to love it.

Swiss Family Robinson (Vault Disney Collection)
The Disney touch is all over this grand, colorful version of the Johann Wyss adventure of a European family set off for the new world of New Guinea. The film opens on a ship jostled and torn by a raging storm while a family struggles to make it through alive. Tossed into a reef near a deserted tropical island, father John Mills takes charge and the family soon turns their island prison into a veritable paradise. Their multilevel tree house, built in record time, is complete with running water and a working pipe organ scavenged from the ship, while their grand yard is abloom in English roses. As a tale of hardship and pioneer pluck, the tale is pure fantasy, but as entertainment it's energetic and appealing. The island is impossibly populated by ostriches, zebras, lions, and elephants, a private zoo that delights the youngest boy and offers plenty of comic relief. The two older brothers discover even wilder life when they rescue the prisoner of oriental pirates (led by hard-bitten Sessue Hayakawa). There's little real danger anywhere in the film--even the climactic battle with the pirates is a cartoonish affair, with coconut bombs and nonlethal booby traps, until the final desperate, deadly moments. Hardly a faithful adaptation of the novel, but a lush, beautifully photographed film and an entertaining adventure safe for all ages. Dorothy McGuire costars as the proper, worry-prone mother. (Ages 5 and older) --Sean Axmaker
Customer Review: Still a great family adventure film!
I watched this as a young girl. I bought it for my 6-year-old who is into Ben 10 and Pokemon, etc. It competes very well with today's shows. The adventure never stops. There are pirates, all kinds of animals, and lots of family themes. The ending is the best. The pirates attack again, but this time the whole family has set booby-traps. It is terrific. There is never a dull moment.
Customer Review: Fond childhood memories
I bought this for a nephew for a Christmas gift. While pondering what to give him, this just popped into my head. As a child, I absolutely loved this movie. And since my nephew is into adventure, pirates, etc I thought it would be a good one. And it was. He really enjoyed the movie and I got to see it again as we made him watch it immediately!! It was just as great as I remembered it and I got to get a peak from a 10 yr old's perspective. I think what most impressed him was the tree house. To anyone who buys this: The movie is 'based' on the original. This is a Disney version of the book. I have not read the classic version; but this one is wonderful for children and adults alike.

Disney Presents Carl Barks' Greatest Ducktales Stories Volume 1

Disney Presents Carl Barks' Greatest Ducktales Stories Volume 1
This special graphic novel collects the vintage Carl Barks Uncle Scrooge stories that DuckTales adapted to animation. This first volume includes "The Lost Crown of Genghis Khan, Land Beneath the Ground," "The Lemming with the Locket" and more!
Customer Review: Classic Carl Barks cartoon gems
This is great stuff... It's hard to beat these old, classic Carl Barks "Donald Duck" stories for their sheer entertainment value and craftsmanship, and for their family-friendly content. My kid recently expressed an interest in comic books, and I was dismayed to find out how little there is out there for really little kids to read... The old Harvey stuff is no longer on the market (and was way too dumb, anyway) and the superhero books I grew up on are just too violent, even reprints of the older stuff. The comicbook industry has grown up along with its readers, but it unfortunately forgot to leave some room for younger readers to enjoy the medium as well. Thank goodness, then, for these Disney reprints from Gladstone publishers -- if you're looking for kid-friendly comics that won't insult your intelligence, this is one of your best bets. Great Comics! Inspired my youngest to love Scrooge and his nephews as I much as I do!

Disney's the Hunchback of Norte Dame: Little Library : Paris Pals, at the Festival, Quasimodo's Bell Tower, Such a Busy City
With spectacular pageantry, memorable music, and endearing characters, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is destined to become a classic. Designed for little hands, these four tiny books tell simple stories about Quasimodo, Esmeralda, and other characters from the film. Full color.-3 yrs.
Customer Review: A Delightful Read
This delightful novel has rekindled my desire to read or re-read the classics. I picked it up for no particular reason other than I had never read Hugo. I didn't expect much: My experience with the classics in high school and college was that they are dull and not worthy of modern reading. But, to my pleasant surprise, I discovered a fascinating book that is rich in wonderful characters and vivid descriptions of 13th century Paris. This is a very good book and it's easy to see why it has stood the test of time.
Customer Review: Notre Dame de Paris -- C'est perfect!
After a recent trip to Paris with my son on a business trip, I decided it was crazy that I had been to Paris and inside Notre Dame so often yet had not read this classic novel. As someone who loves modern Paris, this book captivated me with its vivid portrayal of life in medieval Paris. What a far cry from Baron Hausman's modern Paris -- a Paris with teeming with squalor, poverty, vagabonds -- and the King's Court. Hugo paints wonderful portraits of the main characters -- the hunchback bellringer of Notre Dame, Quasimodo; the tormented archdeacon, Claude Frollo; the exotically beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. All of these characters and the city of Paris come to life in a way that transports one back 650 years. My only criticisms of the book are the couple of chapters that painstakingly outline the street detail of Paris and the layout of Notre Dame. For me, these interrupted the flow of the story, the development of the characters and left me quite bored. As soon as Hugo got back into the core story and plot, I was re-captivated. I do wish that the original French title was preserved -- Notre Dame de Paris -- rather than the English "Hunchback of Notre Dame". While Quasimodo is certainly a core character, the book is a story about medieval Paris, the daily life of the city, the ordinary citizens of the growing city, the privileged class and themes of love, passion, death and honor. For someone misled by the title, this book is far richer, deeper and more complex than just the story of a deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame in spite of the images that are etched in most people's minds, a great many who haven't read the book. This is truly one of those novels that deserves its rightful place in the pantheon of literature classics.
